The hard part isn't the code

You can learn a framework in a weekend. You can pick up a new language in a month. But understanding why a business moves data the way it does — that takes patience nobody warns you about.

Enterprise systems aren't complex because engineers made bad choices. They're complex because the business is complex, and the code is just a reflection of that. Every weird field name, every redundant table, every "why does this exist" moment has a story behind it — usually one involving a decision made under pressure three years ago by someone who's already left.

I've seen this pattern over and over: someone jumps into a codebase, starts refactoring, writes clean abstractions — and completely misses what the system is actually doing. The code compiles. The tests pass. But the logic is wrong because the developer never understood the domain well enough to know what "right" looks like.

The uncomfortable truth is that the most productive thing you can do in your first weeks on an enterprise project is not code. It's reading docs nobody maintains. It's asking questions that feel embarrassingly basic. It's tracing data through five services just to understand why one field exists.

Nobody teaches you this. CS programs teach algorithms and data structures. Bootcamps teach you to build. But the actual job — especially in enterprise — is mostly figuring out what you're building and why before you write a single line.

The real skill isn't writing the code. It's sitting with the confusion long enough to understand the data. And most people skip that part because it doesn't feel like work.

But then there's the harder question — what do you do when the enterprise systems themselves are chaotic? When there's no clean data model hiding underneath, waiting to be discovered? When the mess isn't a failure of documentation but an accurate reflection of how the business actually operates?

I'm still figuring that one out.
